Yup’ik Woman’s Mask

Yup’ik Women’s Mask / Alaska

This mask was collected by William Fisher at Ugashak in 1882. Yup’ik masks were used in dances that honoured those who make life in the Arctic possible. They were used as a form of prayer, making the invisible visible. Some masks were used to tell different stories, sometimes personal to the maker of the mask.
